B.C. Winter Tire Deadline Arrives Oct. 1: Are You Prepared?.
October 09 2025,

In British Columbia, Oct. 1 signals the official start of winter tire requirements on many major highways. These rules remain in effect until April 30, while some routes without steep mountain passes or heavy snowfall see the mandate end earlier on March 31.
Highways Included in the Rules
The regulations apply throughout the North and Interior, along with South Coast routes such as the Sea to Sky Highway. On Vancouver Island, the Malahat, Highway 4, Highway 14, and Highway 28 are also part of the list. The Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island are exempt, but unexpected weather can make winter tires beneficial even there.
Tire Requirements for Compliance
To be considered legal, tires must display the M+S (mud and snow) symbol or the mountain and snowflake emblem. A tread depth of at least 3.5 millimetres is also required. Failure to meet these standards may result in a $121 fine, giving drivers even more reason to prepare properly.
Chain Rules for Commercial Vehicles
Commercial drivers face additional rules. From Oct. 1, most must carry chains on designated highways, with roadside signage indicating when they are necessary. The exception is the Lower Mainland and most of Vancouver Island, where chains are not required.
